You do your research. You save up your money. You decide to go with LED lighting for your precious garden. Back and forth, you weigh your options. You place your order, your new LED light arrives, you’re so excited! It’s so pretty, so new, it comes with so many opportunities and promises for fueling photosynthesis better than any other grow light on the market today. You run to the outlet, plug it in, and are blasted by such bright light! You return with your sunglasses and turn it back on; now you can see all the different colors. Each little lens covered diode is shining in a unique pattern…except for that one, and that one, and those two over there… Oh, no! Your new LED has unlit diodes!
Tell It To Me Straight Doc…
We here at Lush Lighting get this call occasionally,“Hello? My LED has diodes that are not lighting up! What do I do?” Concerned customers that just invested a large amount of money into a promise and in a company. They call and ask for help and the answer is, Infrared (IR). Infrared is explained as invisible radiant energy, electromagnetic radiation with longer wavelengths than those of visible light. Infrared radiation extends from the nominal red edge of the visible spectrum typically at 700and 800 nanometers (NM), but the boundary between visible and infrared light is not precisely defined.
The Good News!
Lush Lighting LED grow lights use near-infrared diodes. Near-infrared is the region closest in wavelength to the radiation detectable by the human eye. The human eye is markedly less sensitive to light above 700nm wavelength. Particularly intense near-infrared light (i.e. LED sources) can be detected up to 780nm, and will be perceived as red light. Simply put, infrared diodes are not defective. While they “appear” to be unlit, they are, in fact, doing what they were intended to do. They are fueling photosynthesis as promised, they’re just in a placement so far into the invisible spectrum that they look as though they aren’t on. You may not be able to see them working but your plant definitely will be able to feel the benefits.
